June 23rd is celebrated as the “International Women in Engineering Day” around the world every year. The day is used to celebrate the impressive and inspiring women in engineering careers and is designed to raise awareness of women in engineering while bringing attention to the career opportunities available to future generations in this exciting industry.
The future strength of the engineering profession will come from an engineering workforce that mirrors the population it serves -- and women make up 49% of the population. It is an exciting time to be an engineer and female engineers are certainly in great demand as data from November 2019 shows only 13% of engineers today are women. Engineering plays a pivotal role in the development of our society and we hope to see opportunities for women continue to increase in the future.
Engineering is all around us, is pivotal to our society and the inner workings of our communities. The word engineering comes from the Latin “ingenium” meaning cleverness and from the word “ingeniare” meaning to design or devise. Smart Designers. Engineering is the skillset to build anything you dream up in your head. Engineers combine creativity, innovation, and problem-solving ingenuity to make people's lives easier.
Civil engineers design, build, and maintain the foundation for our modern society – our roads and bridges, drinking water and energy systems, and the infrastructure for a cleaner environment, to name just a few.
Although our favorite area of study is Civil Engineering, we encourage all of you to marvel at the advancements in society through the contributions of all engineers. Mechanical and electrical engineers design and advance air conditioning and refrigeration but can also design medical equipment and devices that improve patient care as well as remote control cars our children play with. Chemical engineers play a role in the food, drinks, and cleansing products we use daily. Computer and software engineers develop and advance programs that make computers and apps run more efficiently and safely.
Let’s encourage the next generation of female engineers to get excited about shaping the world and engineering our future.
