National Work Zone Awareness Week is an annual campaign held at the start of construction season to bring attention to motorist and worker safety in and around work zones. The key message is to encourage drivers to use extra caution and exercise safe driving through areas where road repairs are taking place.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, in 2021, traffic crashes in the state’s work zones claimed the lives of 244 people, a 33% increase over the previous year. This increase in fatalities reflects a deadly trend nationwide making it all the more important for drivers to slow down and stay focused while approaching and passing through a roadway work zone.
Drivers and their passengers accounted for the majority of those who died in Texas work zone crashes last year: 195 motorists or vehicle passengers were killed, along with 38 pedestrians, four bicyclists and three roadside construction workers. Speeding, driver inattention, and rear-end collisions were among the leading causes of crashes and are all preventable.
Currently, more than 36,000 road construction employees are working in 3,200 active work zones on our Texas roadways. These work zones are hazardous environments and everyone - drivers, workers, and pedestrians - play a part in work zone safety. It is each person’s responsibility to help ensure drivers/cyclists and road workers reach their most important destination: Home!
