Did you know injuries remain the leading cause of hospitalizations, death, and disability for people ages 1 to 44? The good news is that most injuries are preventable. National Injury Prevention Day will be recognized on November 18, 2022. The day is dedicated to raise awareness, educate, and empower people to address injury and violence.
Every day in the United States, people needlessly die from preventable injuries, 20 of which are children. According to the American College of Surgeons, a trauma injury occurs every four seconds in the United States. Injuries lead to more deaths than all other diseases combined. Many of these injuries are preventable with the use of safety practices, products, and policies.
Memorial Hermann’s Trauma Prevention & Community Outreach Coordinator Melanie Bradshaw states the top 3 causes of traumatic injury in The Woodlands continue to be falls, motor vehicle crashes, and motorcycle crashes.
The experts at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Trauma Center recommend the following to prevent or reduce injury:
Fall Prevention
· Slips and Trips, the most common types of falls, can be prevented by removing clutter from walkways, ensuring adequate lighting, and securing any loose rugs.
· Older adults need to remain as active as possible. Look for programs that improve both strength and balance, such as Tai Chi.
· Use caution with medications and alcohol. These are often contributing factors to falls.
Motor Vehicle Safety
· Always wear a seatbelt, which can reduce your chances of severe and fatal injury by 50%.
· Never pick up your phone while driving. Driving requires visual, tactile, and cognitive processing. When you take any of those off the task of driving, your chances for crashing increase dramatically.
· Keep children safe by having them ride in the back of the vehicle in a properly secured car seat or booster seat.
· Stay within the posted speed limit. The odds of being killed or severely injured in a crash double for every 10 mph over 50 mph.
Motorcycles/Bicycles/ATV Safety
· Always wear a helmet which can reduce the risk of traumatic brain injuries by 85%.
